“When I first watched Nicola teach a masterclass at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, I was struck by her facility in working with each singer. She was able to intuitively give each singer what she or he needed at that given moment. She worked physically with each one, loosening up their inhibitions and freeing up their inner voices. Seeing as I had three of my singers following her summer course in Italy that summer, and seeing as I totally agreed with her approach to opening up a singer’s inner voice, I too followed the summer course as a listener. Every minute of each and every day was fascinating! In the beginning of my career, I had had the unbelievable luck of working for a year with the famous director Peter Brook, (singing in “La Tragédie de Carmen” )who based his teachings and directing on Stanislavski’s method of acting. He taught us singers, through various techniques, how get away from the typical singers’ exaggerated movements and how to get into the core of the text, the core of the emotions, so that we could become a conduit of the music’s meaning. I told Nicola how I found her method of teaching so similar to Peter Brook’s, and how her results were the same. What Nicola is able to give to the singers is precious indeed and something that will stay with the singer for the rest of his/her life.”
