Artistic direction

Seven years ago, at the urging and encouragement of many young artists, NBC began to dedicate some of her time to coaching and teaching alongside her well – established and on- going solo career in opera.
Born in Germany, and raised in Spain, the singer-actress came to the classical genre via rock, jazz, street theatre and cabaret.
NBC exhibits a particularly artistic profile in which her experiences as a dancer, instrumentalist and actress enrich her portrayal of operatic figures.

Right from the start of her career the breadth of her artistic abilities that she deploys when embodying her stage figures has been a characteristic feature. After various steady commissions in Germany she began working on a freelance basis in 2001, dedicating her time internationally to portraying the major roles of the 20th century, with female characters such as Salome, Tosca, Wozzeck – Marie and Katerina Ismailova at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Teatro alla Fenice, the Bregenzer Festspiele, the Opera Nationale de Paris, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Opera Genève, La Monnaix Bruxelles, the Opernhaus Zurich, the Canadian Opera Company and many more, regularly working with major artists on the international scene.

NBC developed her interest in teaching in recent years, initiated by repeated requests from young singers who are inspired by NBC’s artistic personality. The need to pass on her own stage experiences and engage creatively and at the same time pragmatically with up-and-coming singers is growing year on year. NBC is focusing more and more – alongside her regular stage work – on teaching, with a focus on the interaction between acting and music.

Nicola Beller Carbone is regularly invited by teaching institutions to give masterclasses and workshops. Her most recent teaching engagements include the Theaterakademie August Everding, the Opernstudio at the Bayerische Staatsoper München, the Opernstudio Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Fundacion International Alfredo Kraus, the Escuela Superior de Canto Madrid, the Académie Rainer III de Monaco, the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino / Opera di Firenze, the Internationales Opernstudio Zürich and the Conservatoire de Montreal.

Between 2013–2018 she ran the summer workshop InCantoTignano near Florence, where, accompanied by an internationally acclaimed team of teachers (including Paul Curran), she worked on the individual vocal performative opportunities and on studying operatic roles with more than 60 singers from all around the world.

Many of her former participants are now young singers with interesting and promising commissions at opera houses internationally.

NBC speaks and teaches in German, Spanish, Italian, English and French.
